STUDENT INDUCTION PROGRAM (2022-2023)

            Transition from school to college life is one of the most challenging events in a students’ life. When new students enter an institution, they come with diverse thoughts, backgrounds and preparations. Induction program helps the students to open up, think creatively and become responsible and independent students.

The Purpose of Student Induction Program is to help the new students adjust and feel comfortable in the new environment, inculcate in them the ethos and culture of the institution, help them build bonds with other students and faculty members, and expose them to a sense of larger purpose and self-exploration.

Student Induction Program engages with the new students as soon as they come into the institution before regular classes start. At the start of the induction, the incumbents learn about the institutional policies, processes, practices, culture and values.

OBJECTIVES:

  • This course is mandatory for all the fresh students admitted in any UG Degree Program offered by the college.
  • To help the students feel comfortable in the new environment and adjust to the customs and practices of the college.
  • To enable the students to become familiar with the amenities and accessing the intellectual and physical resources of the institutions
  • The main aim of the programme is to instil the ideas, practices and spirit of St. Xaviers Catholic College of Engineering and its unique features.
  • To enable the students to understand and have better relationship with the faculty members for setting the pace of fruitful teaching learning experiences.
  • Giving attention to stimulating social integration of students among themselves and with teachers.

The Student Induction Programme for the First year newly admitted students was conducted from 10th August to 30th August  2022 . The Program was conducted in offline mode.  The branches involved are Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE), Computer Engineering (CSE), Information Technology (IT), Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE), Mechanical Engineering (MECH), Civil Engineering (CIVIL), and   Artificial Intelligence and Data Science (AI&DS).

HUMAN VALUE BASED

STUDENT INDUCTION PROGRAM

2022-2023

Articulated in the AICTE Model Curriculum, one of the key measures is the incorporation of education on human values. As per the curriculum a two-week Student Induction Program (SIP) based on Universal Human Values (UHV) has been conducted from 7/11/22 to 17/11/22. The two-week SIP is to prepare newly admitted undergraduate students for the new stage in their life by facilitating a smooth transition from their home and school environment into the college and university environment through various discussions and activities. The Purpose of the Human Value Based Student Induction Program is to learn help the new students adjust and feel comfortable in the new environment, inculcate in them the ethos and culture of the institution, help them build bonds with other students and faculty members, and expose them to a sense of larger purpose and self-exploration.

OBJECTIVES:

The objective of the course is given below:

1.To develop a holistic perspective based on self-exploration about themselves (human being), family, society and nature/existence.

  1. Understanding (or developing clarity) of the harmony in the human being, family, society and nature/existence.
  2. Strengthening of self-reflection.
  3. Development of commitment and courage to act.

The Human Value Based Student Induction Programme for the First year newly admitted students was conducted from 7th November to 17th November 2022. To make the curriculum easier the basics of the optional subjects such as Physics, Maths, Chemistry, English and Computer was added to the SIP. Motivational talk on Self learning, Personality Development and  Leadership was also conducted by various personalities.

To develop the practical knowledge of the students laboratory sessions for Physics, Chemistry and Computer was also conducted. Apart from the subject knowledge, Special Programs such as Way to Success and Virtues of Life was conducted by various personalities. Inorder to ensure the health and safety of the students special programmes on Health Care and hygiene and First aid, Mental and Emotional well being was also arranged through St Xavier’s Nursing college and Kumaraswamy Nursing college.

To raise the concerns of youth with an aim to provide them a platform where they can discuss their issues with each other and finds the solutions of their problems, and to exchange ideas and skills to strengthen their networking a special program on Youth Awareness by the Centre of Lights was conducted through the Counselling cell of SXCCE. An awareness program for the NSS, NCC, YRC, Sports and Hiltek was also conducted in a smooth manner.

SHAX Inauguration

The Inauguration of SHAX ‘ was conducted on 15/12/2023 at 10am in the Conference hall.  The program started with the prayer song. Joint secretary of SHAX welcomed the gathering. The Faculty Advisor Dr.Vidhya J P introduced the new office bearers for this academic year. The annual report was presented by the Secretary of SHAX. Dr.D.Judson, Coordinator of H&Sc introduced the chief guest. Dr.J.Mary Gladis , Associate Professor, Dept of Chemistry, IIST, Trivandrum , gave the  chief guest address.  Felicitations were given by the Principal, Dr.J.Maheswaran and the Bursar, Rev.Fr.M.Francis Xavier. Presidential address was given by the Correspondent, Rev.Fr. M.Maria William. The treasurer of SHAX rendered vote of thanks. The meeting came to an end by the college anthem.

First Year Inauguration

The Inaugural ceremony of the 25th batch, BE/ B.Tech Programmes of St. Xavier’s Catholic College of Engineering was held on 18th November 2022. Rev. Fr. S.Jesu Retnam the Contact Person of the Diocese of Kuzhithurai and the President of the Governing council of St. Xavier’s Catholic College of Engineering presided over the ceremony. Mr.Siva kumar palaniappan, Mindset Mastery Expert, Executive Leadership Coach,  highlighted the programme with his very presence.

The ceremony began with a prayer song and a welcome dance. Rev Dr M Maria William, the correspondent of the college welcomed the gathering. Dr J Maheswaran, the Principal of the college introduced the college. The dignitaries on the dais inaugurated the ceremony by lighting the lamp. Reading from the holy scriptures were read followed by prayer and offering, by the first year students. First year students were asked to take oath lead by Dr D.Judson, the first year Coordinator. Rev. Fr. S.Jesu Retnam, gave an inaugural address highlighting the commitment of the students. Dr M. Marsaline Beno, Dean/Research, introduced the Chief Guest. Mr.SivaKumar Palaniappan, the Chief Guest of the day inspired the students with his  Motivational Talk .                 Two  students from final year CSE and IT shared their experience at SXCCE. The college Magazine “PRO CONZERVE” for the academic year 2021-2022 was released by the Contact person   Rev. Fr. S.Jesu Retnam and received by our chief guest Mr.Sivakumar Palaniappan.  Rev.Fr. Francis Xavier, the Bursar, felicitated the Gathering. DrJ.Christus Jeya Singh, the Vice Principal proposed the vote of thanks. The college choir sang the college Anthem. Fine Arts Students entertained the gathering with dances and orchestra. The Program  ended with the National Anthem.

 

HIGHER ORDER THINKING

 

As per the curriculum , a one credit course on , “Higher Order Thinking” was added to the syllabus of the first year.  Inorder to improve the students   critical and creative thinking skills,  a session on the same  topic  was conducted  for five days from 27/2/2023 to 3/3/2023. The session was handled by an eminent personality, Dr. S.Lourdunathan, Associate Prof &Head,  Department of     Philosophy, Arulanandhar College, Madurai. The session was  interesting and it enables the students to enhance the problem solving skills which is required for an engineer. The resource person gave various activities to the students to make the session a lively one.  Students gained knowledge on deductive and inductive problem solving skills and how to figure out the problems in an easier manner. He also explained about the reasoning ability which can be asked in exams such as GATE . Students enjoyed the sessions and finally the session ended on 3rd March. Mrs.Adline Aruna , Asst Prof, Department of English proposed the vote of thanks.

Parent Teachers Interaction

The Parent Teachers Interaction meeting of the first year students was conducted on 11/03/2023 at 2.30 pm  in the Conference hall.  The meeting started with the prayer song. The PTI Coordinator of first year, Dr.S.Sheen Kumar  welcomed the gathering. The Coordinator of H&Sc, Dr. D.Judson, gave a brief output of the departmental activities. The Principal explained the salient features of autonomous. So many questions and suggestions were raised during the interaction session with the parents. The Principal gave a detailed explanation for all the questions raised. Presidential address was given by the Correspondent, Rev.Fr. Dr.M.Maria William. The Faculty Advisor of SHAX, Dr.Vidhya J P proposed the vote of thanks. The meeting came to an end by 3.30pm with the college anthem. After the meeting the parents met the concerned faculty to get the marks and attendance percentage of their children.

Seminar on Engineering Physics with life applications

A Seminar on “Engineering Physics with life applications”  was conducted on 19th April at the Conference hall for the first year students. Mr.J.Chittanandha, a senior Physics teacher was the Resource person. The program started at 10 am with the prayer song. Dr.Amal J Eronimus, AP/Placement and Training cell proposed the welcome address. Dr.Vidhya J P, AP/ English, introduced the chief guest. The chief guest motivated the students through his inspiring words. Students had an interactive session with the resource person. The session came to an end at 12.15 pm.

 Industrial Visit

Students of  the first year  UG underwent an industrial visit to UST Global, Trivandrum Students were  given a session on the overview of UST Global and then about the recruitment process of UST. Mr.Sthanu, the senior expert of UST  handled the session in a great manner.  After the session the students were splitted into teams and the representatives took the students to a campus tour. The students enjoyed the tour and learned many things about UST.

  National Seminar on “English Language Learning for Engineers”

The Department of English organized a one day National Seminar on“English Language Learning for Engineers” on 9th May at the Conference hall. The main objective of the seminar is to make the students to know the importance of English language. The seminar begins with an inaugural session. Dr.Vidhya J P, Asst .prof, Department of English welcomed the gathering. The Principal Dr.J.Maheswaran addressed the gathering with his inaugural address. Dr.M.Maenu, AP/Dept of English, introduced the chief guest, Dr.Pradeep.S.Raj, AP/Kristu Jayanti College, Bangalore. The chief guest briefed out the need of English language for Engineers and he was honored by the Correspondent. In his Presidential address, the Correspondent, Rev.Dr.M.Maria William point out the importance of English language. Finally the inaugural session ends up at with the vote of thanks by Mrs.Adline Aruna, AP/Dept of English.

The first session starts by 10 am with the presentation of Dr.Pradeep. He explained the importance of English and English proficiency for Engineering students. He gave an eye opening session for the students. The second session starts at 11.15 am with the Resource person , Dr.Tibi Thomas , AP/NMCC, Marthandam. He was welcomed by Dr.Vidhya J P, AP/Dept of English. He explained the various features of language which comprises stress, intonation and pause. He was honored by Dr.James Ligorios, communication Skills Trainer/SXCCE. Finally the session came to an end by 12.30 pm.

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ADVANCES IN SUSTAINABILITY OF MATERIALS AND ENVIRONMENT

(ICASME’23)

The 4th International Conference on Advances in Sustainability of Materials and Environment (ICASME'23), which was held on May 25 and 26, 2023, in Nagercoil, Tamil Nadu, India. The conference was organized by the departments of civil engineering and chemistry at St. Xavier's Catholic College of Engineering.

ICASME'23 was created to give academic, research, scientific, and business specialists a forum for exchanging and disseminating ideas regarding the most recent developments in science and technology. The conference's main emphasis was on the interactions between theory, implementation, research applications, etc. in the relevant field, which produced collaborative R&D projects and new project proposals that ultimately led to knowledge exchange among researchers and faculty members. Let me acknowledge that the conference was an effective endeavor to spread information within its community.

The International conference is technically Co-Sponsored by IET, Reach and SHAX.

In order to reach a global audience, a website, https://www.sxcce.edu.in/iwcasme23/ was hosted in the month of December 2022, and a brochure was released on 9th february, with the blessings of our Correspondent Rev. Dr. M. Maria William and the support of our Principal Dr. J. Maheswaran.

The keynote addresses given by specialists in Civil Engineering, Chemistry, Material Science, and Intellectual Property Right are what will make the conference come alive. Dr. S.T. Ramesh, Head of the Department of Civil Engineering at the National Institute of Technology in Trichy, gave a keynote address on "Advances in the Sustainability of Materials and the Environment" on May 25, 2023 Forenoon. Dr. Mohamed Abdul Mannan, a Malaysian professor at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, spoke about "Agriculture and Industrial Wastes as Renewable Resources for Medium Strength Self-Compacting Concrete" that same day in the afternoon. The first plenary speech was given on "Intellectual Property Rights and its role in technology developments" on May 26 at noon by Dr. P. Arumugam, founder and CEO of Mark IPServices, an Indian patent agent in Chennai, India. A second Keynote address on "Circular Economy and Sustainability of Metallic Materials" was also given in the afternoon by Dr. T.P. D. Rajan, Senior Principal Scientist, CSIR NIIST, Thiruvananthapuram.

In the fields of Civil Engineering, Chemistry, Renewable energy sources, Soft computing methods, Material Science, and Environmental Studies, ICASME'23 has covered a variety of topics. Each topic was broken down into one of six categories: Civil and Building Science, Chemistry and Physical Science, Energy Efficient Technologies, Mathematical Modelling and Soft Computing Techniques, Material Science, and Environmental Science. The research articles were subsequently categorized. 86 research papers in total were registered, and they were all presented in four sessions across four locations.

In addition to participants from Tamilnadu, delegates from Oman and Tanzania as well as different regions of the country, particularly Rajasthan, Odissa, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Karnataka, Telungana, Kerala, Andra Pradesh, Punjab, etc., benefited from the conference. This was followed by effective publicity and ongoing mobilization.

ICASME'23 covered a wide range of topics including civil engineering, chemistry, renewable energy sources, soft computing techniques, material science, and environmental studies. All of the topics were grouped under six themes including civil and building science, chemistry and physical science, energy efficient technologies, and mathematical modelling. All of the accepted research papers were published in Conference proceedings ICASME'23 with ISBN no. 978-93-5811-584-0.

Student Induction Program OBE - Report (2021-2022)

The department of H&Sc has conducted a three week Student Induction Programme on Outcome Based Education for the management students from 27-09-2021 to 13-10-2021 through online mode. The program started with an inauguration on 27-09-2021 followed by special talks by our Correspondent and the Principal. Mr.M.Prabhakaran, Director, Innate Talent Pvt Ltd chennai also gave a motivational talk on personality development on the first day. 33 sessions were conducted for the students. 4 sessions were allotted for English, 5 sessions each for Mathematics, Computer Programming, Physics and Chemistry.  6 motivational sessions were also arranged and was engaged by the Deans and the placement officer. An overview about Outcome Based Education was given by IQAC Coordinator Dr.A.Milton. 302 students attended the Student Induction Programme. Nearly 29 faculty members handled classes for the students. At the end of the day, online exam was also conducted and participation certificates were issued for all the students.

Human Values Based Student Induction Program Report (2021-2022)

The department of H&Sc has conducted a two week Human Values Based Student Induction Programme for all the first year students from 8-11-2021 to 19-11-2021. Nearly 468 students participated in the program. The program started with an Institution Orientation by Co-ordinators of concerned classes.   Within these allotted days 54 sessions were conducted for the students. With 5 sessions each for English, Mathematics, Computer programming, Physics, Chemistry, 3 sessions for physics & chemistry laboratory and 2 sessions for computer laboratory. Department HODs were also engaged the classes followed by their department visit. Campus visit was arranged to get an idea about the college campus.

In addition to the classes we have also conducted sessions on Human values and Leadership by Fr. Southern Star and Fr.Vijayan Rajan Babu director of counseling Ministry,Diocese of Kottar respectively. Personality development sessions were conducted by Fr.J.Anto Halwin,Pariesh Priest,Padar Nilam. Virtues of life session were conducted by Dr.V.Christus Jeyasingh, Dean, Students Affairs. Sports were also included in this program as a physical activity.  Way to Success program was organized by St.Xavier’s Alumini Association to improve the soft skill development of the students.  Youth Awareness Program was conducted by Sr.Efamia Lucy Joice and team, Psycho Spirtual Counsellor.

Health care and hygienic session was conducted by our college nurse S.Nesa Hilda. First Aid, Mental and Emotional Wellbeing sessions were conducted by the professors (Prof.Rajeshwari, Prof.Ida Divya Sherly, Dr.T.Arul Valan, Prof.Beula) of  Dr.Kumaraswamy Health centre and  college of Nursing, Kanyakumari.A visit to Ponmalai was arranged for the students as a part of outside activity.

Mr.K.V.Lakshmi Narayanan, Senior Human Resource Manager and OD Leader, Infosys highlighted the programme with his very presence.

Four MOUs from ICT Academy were exchanged. Mr V Poorna Prakash, Senior Manager in Academic initiative and state head, ICT Academy, Tamil Nadu addressed the gathering and motivated the first years on the benefits of learning at St.Xavier’s catholic college of Engineering. Two senior students shared their experience at SXCCE. Rev.Fr. Francis Xavier, the Bursar, felicitated on the occasion. Dr.R.S.Shaji, Dean of Research proposed the vote of thanks. The college choir sang the college Anthem. Student’s entertained the gathering with dances and songs. The inaugural ceremony came to an end with National Anthem by 2 p.m.

SHAX Installation 2021-2022(Virtual)

SHAX installation 2021-2022 for the first year students was held on 31.01.2022 through virtual mode. The main objective of this programme was to enhance the student’s association activities and introduce the new office bearers. The programme began at 2pm with a prayer song by the college choir.

Dr.T.M.Chenthil Jegan, Coordinator of H&Sc warmly welcomed the gathering. The Faculty Advisor, Ms. A.Maria Sheela introduced the new office bearers. The student secretary Ms.R.Jeslin Raj presented the annual (2020-2021) SHAX report. Dr.J.Maheswaran, the Principal gave special address. Ms.M.Thusnavis Illavarasi, Co-Faculty Advisor introduced the chief guest.

Mr.Ramkumar Sivakumar, Embedded Software Engineer, Director–Alliston Technologies Pvt Ltd, Nagercoil was the Chief Guest of the auspicious day. He gave a motivational talk on how to be successful as an engineer. Rev.Dr.M.Maria William, the Correspondent, delivered the presidential address. Ms.A.Annie Joe Preethi, the treasurer gave vote of thanks. The meeting came to an end with the college anthem.

The whole installation ceremony was co-ordinated by the Coordinator, Faculty Advisor with the support of HODs of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, English and all the faculty and staff members of Humanities and Science department. Research Opportunities-Innovation, Invention and Patent 2021-2022 (Virtual)

The department of H&Sc has conducted a webinar on “Research Opportunities-Innovation, Invention & Patent” for first year ECE students on 16-02-2022 from 10.00am-11.00am.

The webinar was conducted through virtual mode.  Asst.Professor Alexin Shaya Ithal welcomed the gathering and introduced the speaker. The resource person Mr.H.Hareesh Krishnan, Research fellow NIT, explained the concepts of innovation, invention and patent.

The webinar was arranged by Dr.T.M. Centhil Jegan, Coordinator of H&Sc and Ms.A.Maria Sheela, Faculty Advisor of SHAX. 62 students attended the seminar. The google meet link https://meet.google.com/xrw-gndp-hmx was used for the webinar.

Feedback was collected from the students and E-certificates were issued for all the participants.

Parent Teachers Interaction (2021-2022)

Parent Teachers Interaction meeting for the first year students was held on 09/04/2022 at 2.00 p.m. in the Conference Hall. The meeting was organized by Department of Humanities & Science. It was a meeting between the parents and the staff who are handling classes for the first year students. Around two hundred and twenty parents attended the meeting along with the staff members. The meeting started with a prayer song and welcome address was given by the PTIC member, Dr.L.Mary Florida. The Principal, Dr.J Maheswaran gave the special address related to the various activities of the college. He gave the detailed academic schedule, Internal Exam performances and disciplinary issues among the students. He advised the students to enhance their study habit and to maintain good attendance and to study the daily portion. Parents and teachers can combine and make the students to achieve their goal. The Vice Principal, Dr. V.Christus Jeyasingh felicitated the gathering. He explained the students to fulfil their ambition and also to develop their Entrepreneur skills and advised the parents to monitor the character and habits of their wards. The first year coordinator Dr.T.M.Chenthil Jegan explained the various departmental activities held during odd semester like Induction programme, Human values based Induction Programme, SHAX installation, Gate Coaching and communication skills. The PTIC Convenor, Dr.J.Merry Geisa, elected the parent executive members among. The Correspondent, Rev.Dr.M.Maria William gave the presidential address. He asked that the students should be ready to file patent after the completion of their course. The meeting ended at 4.00p.m with the vote of thanks by Mrs.A.Maria Sheela, the faculty advisor of SHAX.

The following suggestions were given by the parents:

  • Send SMS to parents regarding late comers and class test marks.
  • Inform the parents about the cell/clubs.
  • Guide the students to develop soft skills like coding
  • Arrange special coaching for failures

Followed by the formal meeting, a high tea was provided and the parents were directed to the department wise meeting venue to meet the subject in charges, mentors and class co-ordinator for interaction regarding their wards’ academic performances and disciplinary issues. The interaction came to an end by 5.00 pm.

District level quiz competition for Higher Secondary School students- SPHINX’22 

A one day district level quiz competition- SPHINX’22 for higher secondary school students was organized by SHAX (Science & Humanities Association of Xavier’s) of Humanities & Sciences department on 19.04.2022.

Students from various schools came with their teachers and registered for the competition.  A preliminary online quiz was conducted at 10.30a.m in the Computer centre. It came to an end by 11.30a.m.with a tea break.  48 students participated in the preliminary round.

The final round quiz competition was conducted by Fr.Sebastian Francis, Founder and Director of Sigaram Academy of Excellence. The selected five teams participated in the final round which was held at 12.15p.m.in the Einstein Seminar Hall. There were seven rounds with different question patterns. The quiz session attributed more flavour for the programme.  The quiz master conducted the competition in an interesting and motivating way.

The first prize with a cash award of Rs.3000 and Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam Rolling Trophy was bagged by Alphonsa Matric Higher Secondary School, Nagercoil for the Second time. The second prize with a cash award of Rs.2000 was also received by Alphonsa Matric Higher Secondary School, Nagercoil and the third prize with a cash award of Rs.1000 was received by Nanjil Catholic School (CBSE),Vazhuthalampallam

The valedictory function started with a prayer song at 2.30 p.m. Mrs.A.Maria Sheela, Faculty Advisor, SHAX, welcomed the gathering. The Quiz Master, Fr.Sebastian Francis in his talk expressed that students should attend various quiz programme like this, which will help them to develop their critical and logical thinking. The Principal, Dr.J.Maheswaran, gave the presidential address. He asked the students to develop their knowledge through learning by attending quizzes like this.

In the prize distribution session, prizes, certificates and the Rolling Trophy were given to the school students. Participation certificates were also given to all the participants.  At the end of the programme Dr.T.M. Chenthil Jegan, the Coordinator of H&Sc proposed the vote of thanks.  The meeting came to an end with the national anthem at 3.20p.m.

The whole programme was co-ordinated by the Coordinator Dr.T.M.Chenthil Jegan, Faculty Advisor Mrs.A.Maria Sheela, HODs of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English, and all the faculty members of Humanities and Science department.

Student Orientation Program - Report (2021-2022)

The department of Humanities and Science has conducted Student orientation Programme on 27-05-2022 in two sessions. Dr.D.Judson, Coordinator, H&Sc welcomed the gathering. Dr.J.Maheswaran, The Principal gave instructions to students regarding late coming, mobile usage and discipline issues. He asked the students to develop the habit of studying daily portions and also to register for online courses. Rev.Fr.Dr.M.Maria William, the Correspondent in his speech advised the students to work hard to be creative and over all to be a good human being. He also gave tips to develop their personality and intellectual growth by overcoming the   various distractions. The programme came to an end with the vote of thanks by Dr.J.Mary Vanaja, HOD, and Department of English.

  Industrial visit was arranged for the first year students to Priyadarsini Planetarium and Museum, Trivandrum and Sankar Cements Ltd, Tirunelveli from 31-05-2022 to 04-06-2022.

 Objectives of the visit:

  • To go beyond the academic activities.
  • To understand the concept of Planetarium, a specially designed theater with a domed ceiling that project a realistic image of the night sky indoors.
  • To educate about stars, planets, and constellations.
  • To support Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) learning and to cross learning discipline into art, culture and history.
  • To educate about various terrestrial and aquatic bio diversity.
  • To understand the working principle of various equipment related to physics.
  • To understand the concept of cement manufacturing, selection of raw materials and testing of cement quality.

Outcomes:        

  • Students will develop interest to carry out research for the production of high quality cement
  • Students will get opportunity to generate awareness about bio-diversity.
  • Students will get hands on experience on present satellite technology.
  • Students will develop interest to carry out research related to solar system.
  • Students will be encouraged to develop new ides in the field of marine bio-diversity.

Orientation Seminar on Goal setting and Awareness on Research 2021-2022

The department of H&Sc has conducted a seminar on “Goal setting and Awareness on Research” for all the first year students (department-wise) from 21.6.2022 to 23.6.2022. 421 students participated in the seminar. The main objective of this seminar is to create awareness among the first year students about research and also to set their short term and long term goal.

The resource person, Dr.M.Marsaline Beno, Dean/Centre for Research, St.Xavier’s Catholic College of Engineering, explained the concepts of innovation, invention in research and gave tips to set goals.

At the end of the seminar, students were given a form and asked to write their long term and short term goals.

Communicative English Language Teaching and Learning Report 2021-2022

With a view to augmenting and updating the knowledge and methods of English language teaching and learning, the Training and Placement Cell in coordination with the Department of Humanities and Sciences organized a two day district level workshop for High School and Higher Secondary School English language teachers. The theme of the workshop was chosen on the basis of the dire need of reformation in language teaching paradigm. A Communicative Language Teacher is a resourceful facilitator.  His or her duty is to bring the real world to the classroom. The worldwide demand of English language has created an enormous demand for quality English language teaching and learning around the world. CLT, thus, offers an opportunity to make language learning more interesting, meaningful and purposeful. The workshop started with the inauguration ceremony at 10 a.m. on 15th July, 2022. St. Xavier’s choir sang the prayer song. Dr. J. Maheswaran, Principal welcomed the resource persons and participants. Dr. James Ligorias, presented the convener’s note. Ms. J.P. Vidhya read out the theme of the workshop.  Rev. Fr. Dr. M. Maria William, correspondent delivered the presidential and inaugural address. Rev. Fr. M. Francis Xavier, Bursar greeted everyone for the successful conduct of the workshop. Dr. Judson, Coordinator, Dept. of Humanities and Sciences proposed the vote of thanks. A total number of 54 teachers from different matric, aided, and govt. schools of KK district participated in the workshop.

Foundation Course for Engineering Aspirants (GENESIS)  

The department of Humanities and Sciences of St. Xavier’s Catholic College of Engineering has conducted a two-week free online Foundation Course for Engineering Aspirants(GENESIS) for the +2 students from 28-06-2021 to 09-07-2021. Dr.Shaji, the Dean of Research welcomed the gathering.  A special address was given by our Principal Dr.J.Maheswaran.  Mr.Roshan Roy, The Director, TalenTus HR Solutions Private Ltd., Kottayam delivered the chief guest address. Rev.Dr.M.Maria William, the correspondent gave the presidential address.

Within these allotted days, 30 sessions were conducted for the students. 7 sessions were allotted for Communication skills, 7 for Mathematics for Higher Education, 7 for Engineering Physics and 7 for Engineering Chemistry. 2 sessions were allotted for 21st Century Skills for Today’s Students, and Mr.Roshan Roy, the  chief guest motivated the students on the topic.  Students attended the course through Google Meet. And also they joined the Google classroom and gathered notes and information of all the sessions.

166 students registered through the public media. 301 students attended the Foundation Course. Nearly, 19 professors handled classes for the students. After a week, a mid-feedback was collected from the students.  Students shared their feedback positively.  At the end of the day feedback was collected from the students and E-certificate was issued for all the students.  The Foundation course was co-ordinated by Dr.T.M.Chenthil Jegan, the Coordinator, Dr.M.Felix Nes Mabel, the Faculty Advisor, HODs of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English, and all the Faculty and Staff of the department of Humanities and Sciences.

The speakers briefly explained the applications of mathematics in engineering in simple and understanding way.  Students easily understood the concepts and they got idea about where we apply mathematics in Engineering.  The online Student Induction Program was organized by Dr.T.M.Centhil Jegan, Coordinator, H&Sc, Dr.L.Mary Florida, HOD of Mathematics and Dr.M.Felix Nes Mabel, Faculty Advisor, SHAX.

Nearly 244 students and 20 staff members attended the SIP. The SIP was conducted through the Google meet link: http://meet.google.com/dbm-wdda-eki. The sessions began with introductory notes followed by the speakers’ presentation. Feedback was collected for all the days. Participation certificates were issued for all the participants.

Students from various schools registered around 10.00am in our college campus.  A Preliminary Online Test was conducted at 10.30a.m in the Computer Lab-III. It came to an end by 11.15a.m. with a tea break.  40 students and 12 teachers participated in the competition.

The Quiz Competition was conducted by Dr.R.James Ligorias, Professor in English & Communication Trainer. The selected six teams participated in the final round. It started at 11.30a.m. in the ECE Seminar Hall. There were nine rounds with different question patterns. The Quiz session attributed more flavour for the programme.  The quiz master conducted the completion in an interesting and motivating way.

Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose 125th Birth Anniversary (Virtual)

As per the direction of AICTE, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose 125th birth anniversary was celebrated in our college on 23rd January 2021 through virtual mode in association with SHAX and KONVERZ students of our college. The main objective of the programme is to know about Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. The following competitions on ‘Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose’ were conducted for the students of H&Sc and KONVERZ on that day through virtual mode: Essay writing - English, Creative writing - English, Poetry writing -English.

The first three places were selected and E-certificates were issued for all the winners and participants. 53 students participated in the competitions.

The online programme was organized by Dr.T.M.Chenthil Jegan, Coordinator, H&Sc, Dr.M.Felix Nes Mabel, Faculty Advisor, H&Sc, Ms. M.Thasnavis Illavarasi, HOD in English.

Creative and Innovation in Engineering(Virtual)- 2020-2021

Keynote Speaker : Prof Manish Jain, Associate Teaching Professor and Principal coordinator of Center for Creative Learning.

The main objective of the programme is to motivate the students to develop their creative and innovation skills. The Student Induction Programme was conducted through the virtual mode. The speaker motivated the students toimprove their creative and innovation skills through experiments. The programme was highly enriching. The speaker motivated students through lot of demonstration.  SHAX Installation (Virtual)-2020- 2021

SHAX installation 2020 for the first year students was held on 22.12.2020 through virtual mode. The main objective of this programme was to enhance the students’ association activities and introduce the new office bearers. The programme began at 2pm with a prayer song by the college choir.

Dr.T.M.Chenthil Jegan, Coordinator of H&Sc warmly welcomed the gathering. The Faculty Advisor, Dr.M.Felix Nes Mabel introduced the new office bearers. The student secretary Mr.E.Allan Gonsalves presented the annual(2019-2020) SHAX report.  Dr.J.Maheswaran, the principal gave special address. Ms.A.Maria Sheela, Co-Faculty Advisor introduced the chief guest.

Shri.A.Bala Ganesa Moorthy, Manager–Digital, Onward Technologies, Chennai was the Chief Guest of the auspicious day. Rev.Dr.M.Maria William, the Correspondent, delivered the presidential address. Mr.B.Gerald Briyolan, the treasurer gave vote of thanks. The meeting came to an end with the college anthem.

The whole installation ceremony was co-ordinated by the Coordinator, Faculty Advisor, HODs of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English and all the faculty members of Humanities and Sciences department. Seminar on Positive Thinking(Virtual)-2020-2021

The main objective of the programme is to develop the positive thinking of students.  The power seminar was conducted through the virtual mode.  Dr.L.Mary Florida, Associate Professor of Mathematics welcomed the gathering and introduced the speaker. Shri. Leslie J Praveen Kumar, the speaker motivated the students regarding positive thinking with his life experiences.  His talk was interesting and motivating. At the end of the seminar Dr.V.Vijimon Moni, Assistant Professor of Mathematics proposed the vote of thanks.

Indian Constitution Day(Virtual)-2020-2021

As per the direction of AICTE the constitution day was celebrated in view of the 70th Anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution of India, in our college on 26th November 2020 through virtual mode in association with SHAX, NCC and NSS students of our college. The main objective of the programme is to bring awareness on Indian Constitution among students. The following competitions on ‘Constitution of India ’were conducted for the students of  H&Sc, NCC and NSS on that day through virtual mode; Essay writing Tamil, Essay writing English, Elocution Tamil, Elocution English, Poetry writing Tamil and Drawing/Poster Designing.

Inaugural Ceremony of the 23rd Batch- B.E/B.Tech Programme (2020-2021)

The inaugural ceremony of the 23rd batch of B.E./B.Tech. programme was conducted through virtual mode on 16th November 2020 at 10.00am.  The programme began at 10am with a prayer song by our college choir.  Students read verses from the Bible, the Bhagavad Gita and the Quran.  Dr.V.Christus Jeya Singh, the dean of student affairs formally welcomed the dignitaries, chief guest, deans, management, staff, parents and new entrants.

A brief introduction about the college was given by our Principal, Dr.J.Maheswaran. The dignitaries on the daislighted the Kuthuvilakku. Prayer and offering was rendered by our students. Rev.Fr.S.Jesu Retnam, the President of our Governing Council and the Contact Person of the R.C. Diocese of Kuzhithurai gave the inaugural address. He emphasized that students conversion was very important and parents should not compel the students to join any course. He again expressed that students must have commitment towards their course. Dr.M.Marsaline Beno, the Vice Principal introduced the chief guest. Shri.Nandha Kumar, IRS, Additional Commissioner, Income Tax Department, Government of India delivered the chief guest address. He motivated the students regarding self-esteem, career guidance and competitive exams.

College anthem was sung by our college choir. E-newsletter of the academic year was launched by Rev.Fr.S.Jesu Retnam. Rev.Dr.M.Maria William,    the correspondent gave a special address. He motivated the students to follow the path of great people. He also stressed that students should opt their course intellectually. Rev.Fr.M. Francis Xavier, the Bursar felicitated on the occasion. He spoke optimistically that everything is possible for a human. He asked the students to think positively and act accordingly.

At the end of the programme Dr.T.M. Chenthil Jegan, the Coordinator of H&Sc proposed the vote of thanks.  He thanked all the invited guests, parents, faculty, staff and students for gracing the occasion by their solemn presence through you tube. The programme ended with the national anthem.

The whole inaugural function was co-ordinated by the Coordinator, HODs of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English, Faculty Advisor Dr.M.Felix Nes Mabel and all the faculty members of Humanities and Sciences department. Induction Program Report (2020-2021)

 

The department of H&Sc has conducted a three week Student Induction Programme (SIP) for the management students from 23-09-2020 to 13-10-2020 through online mode. Within these allotted days, 42 sessions were conducted for the students. 9 sessions were allotted for English, 8 for Mathematics, 9 for Computer Programming, 3 for Physics and 3 for Chemistry.  In addition, one hour was allotted for special talks by the Correspondent and the Principal and 3 sessions were allotted for departmental activities.6 motivational sessions were also engaged by the Deans and Department senior professors. 269 students attended the Student Induction Programme. Nearly 30 faculty members handled classes for the students. At the end of the day online exam was conducted for all the students.  Online exam was conducted for the absentees on 16-10-2020. Participation certificates were issued for all the students.

The department also conducted a one week Special Induction Programme for all the students from 9-11-2020 to 13-11-2020 through online mode.  15 sessions were conducted for the students.  3 sessions were allotted for English, 3 for Mathematics, 2 for Computer Programming, 2 for Physics and 2 for Chemistry.  In addition, one hour was allotted for introduction talks by the Principal, 1 session was allotted for value education and 1 session was allotted for personality development. 370 students attended the Special Induction Programme. Nearly 25 faculty members handled classes for the students. At the end of the day entry level test was conducted for all the students.   Certificates were issued for all the attended students.

Orientation Programme (2019-2020)

The first year orientation programme for academic year 2019-2020 was organized on 26th& 27th of June 2019. On 26th June 2019 the inaugural function was started by 9.30 a.m. The presidential address was given by the correspondent Rev.Fr. Dr. M. Maria William, the key note address was presented by Dr. J. Maheswaran/Principal, Rev.Fr. M.Francis Xavier felicitate the gathering. Dr. M. Marsaline Beno/Dean- academic, welcome the gathering, Dr. V. Christus Jeyasingh/Dean-Student affairs, and Dr. A. Milton/IQAC coordinator gave felicitations. Dr. T. M. Chenthil Jegan/First year coordinator, gave vote of thanks.

Dr. J. Maheswaran/Principal, gave a talk about the college. Dr. R. Edwin Raj-professor/Mech, delivered a talk about personality development. There were a number of presentations given by the professors of various supportive cells(NCC,NSS,YRC,SHAX, Placement, Sports& College Choir).

On 27th June 2019  Dr. James Ligorias-Professor/English,delivered a talk on communication skills.. Prof.Jerlin-MBA department, gave presentation on success in life. Dr. M. Marsaline Beno/Dean- academic, inspired the students on the topic Engineers make the world. Prof.M.Sebastian-professor/English, gave an interesting session on success Mantras. Finally the two- day orientation programme came to an end with the campus visit by 4 p.m.

 Induction Program (2019-2020)

St. Xavier’s Catholic College of Engineering planned and arranged a four week Induction program (01-07-2019 to 25-07-2019) for the academic year 2019-2020. It started on 01-07-19. Around 300 students are benefitted. They are given an exposure to the college environment and are also introduced to the basic knowledge in their branch of studies.

We have conducted a four week induction programme for the management students from 01-07-2019 to 25-07-2019. Within these allotted days 64 sessions were conducted for the students. 10 sessions were conducted for English, 10 sessions were conducted for Mathematics and 2 sessions for computer programming, 04 sessions were conducted for physics and chemistry each and 2 sessions each for physics &chemistry laboratory, 12 sessions were conducted for departmental activities, In addition to the classes we have conducted  Motivational sessions. 10 Motivational sessions were engaged by all department HOD’s, Deans and department senior professors. 08 sports sessions were allotted for the students in which students height and weight were measured. To increase the social responsibility and helping tendency of the students they were taken to orphanages, Thirupathisaram on 04-07-2019, Pulliyadi on 11-04-2019, and oldage home in Mukkadal on 18-07-2019. A one day activity programme was conducted. An online quiz programme was conducted for the students on 24-07-2019. Participation certificates were issued by our principal Dr. J. Maheswaran and winners were awarded with prizes by our Vice-Principal Dr. Marselline Beno.

Calculator Usage Training (2019-2020)

For the efficient usage of Calculator, the management has planned to give the training program for the first year students on 04-09-2019. Mr.Jagatheesh explained the menus and gave the demo to the students’ How to operate the fx991-Model calculator’. 

SHAX installation (2019-2020)

SHAX installation ceremony for the first year students was held on 31.9.19 at Conference hall in St. Xavier’s Catholic College of Engineering. The main objective of this programme was toenhance the studentsassociationactivities &introduce the new office bearers. Training programme through Hill Tek Robotics Research centre (2019-2020)

A special training for robots and its application was given through Hill Tech Robotic research centre. Branch wise training is planned and executed. Totally three days training has been conducted for all the first year students. Each training has the span of two hours and in this semester three hours training is given to all the students. In this program all the basics related with the robots and its components were discussed.   Next semester also planning to conduct 3 days training for the first year students. Scheduled dates for the training program are from       01-10-2019 to 15-11-2019.

Awareness Program for students on Traffic rules and laws (2019-2020)

Awareness program for students on traffic rules and lawsfor the first year students was held on 10.10.2019 at Conference hall in St. Xavier’s Catholic College of Engineering. The main objective of this programme was tomotivate the students regarding the importance of traffic rules and regulations prevention of anti-ragging avoiding drugs and cybercrime effective usage of social medias and associated laws. Mr.Arul, Training DSP -Thuckalay, Mr.RobertJain,Sub-Inspector of police-Eraniel and Mrs.N.Maheswari, Traffic Reserve Inspector-Colachel werefelicitating the gathering on the auspicious day. Dr.J. Maheswaran, the principal,warmly welcomed the gathering. Rev.Fr.Dr.M.Maria William, the Correspondent, delivered the Presidential address.Rev.Fr.M.FrancisXavier,Burser,gave the special address. Prizes were distributed for the first year students those who are excelled in the Anna university Internal examination I. Dr.T.M.ChenthilJegan,First year coordinator, gave Vote of thanks. The meeting came to an end with the National Anthem. Around 400 first year students were benefited from this program.

 Parent Teacher’s Interaction:2019-2020 ( First Semester)

 Date: 09-11-2019                   Venue: Conference Hall                                     Time: 2.00pm - 5.00pm

The Parent Teachers’ Interaction meeting was held on 09/11/2019 at 2.00 p.m. in the Conference Hall. Aroundthree hundred parents attended the meeting along with the staff members. The meeting started with the prayer song and the welcome address was given by the first year coordinator Dr.T.M.Chenthil Jegan. The Principal, Dr.J.Maheswaran gave the special address related to the various activities of the college which are in progress to attain NBA for CIVIL, CSE IT and autonomous status. He also detailed the academic schedule, Anna University regulations, Internal Exam performances and disciplinary issues among the students. The Bursar, Rev. Fr. M. Francis Xavier felicitated the gathering. He explained about the students’ dress code and hair style and advised the parents to monitor the character and habits of their wards. The first year coordinator Dr.T.M.Chenthil Jegan explained the various departmental activities held during odd semester like Induction programme, orphanage visit and Awareness programme on traffic rules and laws.  The Correspondent, Rev.Dr.M.Maria William gave the presidential address. He explained about the mentality of students and gave tips to parents to take care of their children’s mental and physical health. The meeting ended at 4.15p.m. with the vote of thanks by Dr. A. Ludvin Felcy, the faculty advisor of SHAX.

The following suggestions were given by the parents:

      • Monitor the students to study well
      • Guide the students for competitions and examination
      • Arrange special coaching for girls in sports
      • Extend bus route of bus no. 3 or 18 to Kalingarajapuram

Followed by the formal meeting, a high tea was provided and the parents were directed to the department wise venue to meet the mentors and faculty for interaction regarding their wards’ academic performances and disciplinary issues. The interaction came to an end by 5.00 pm.

An Inter-school Quiz Competition –SPHINX-19

An Inter-School District Level Quiz Competition was organized by SHAX (Science & Humanities Association of Xavier’s) of the Department of Humanities & Sciences was held on 19.11.19.

A Preliminary Online Test was conducted at 10 .30 a.m in New CAD Lab. It came to an end around11. 30. a.m. with a tea break.

The QuizCompetition was conducted by Prof. M.Sebastian. The selected six teams participated in the final round. It started at 12 p.m. in the Seminar Hall. There were ten rounds with different question patterns. The Quiz session attributed more flavor for the programme.

The first prize with a cash award of Rs. 3000 and Dr.A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Rolling Trophy (for the third time) was won by Alphonsa Matric Higher Secondary School. The second Prize with a cash award of Rs.2000 was received by Adlin Matric Higher Secondary School, Nagercoil and the Third prize with a cash award of Rs.1000 was received by Victory MatricHigherSecondarySchool.

The Valedictory function started with a Prayer Song at 2.30 p.m. Dr.A.LudvinFelcy, Faculty Advisor,SHAX,welcomed the gathering. Dr.J.Maheswaran, the Principal gave Special Address. The Correspondent Rev.Dr. M. Maria William felicitated the gathering. The Quiz Master’s address was given by  Prof. M. Sebastian.

The First year Coordinator, Dr.T.M.ChenthilJegan,gave Vote of Thanks. In the Prize distribution session, prizes, certificates and the Rolling Trophy were given to the school students. Those who are exceled in Internal Exam II were honored by the dignitaries. The meeting came to an end with the National Anthem at 4 p.m.

INDUSTRIAL VISIT (2019-2020)

 Industrial visit was conducted for the first year students to the District Science Centre, Tirunelveli from 03-02-2020 to 06-02-2020.

On the first day(03-02-2020) Mechanical A and B students (92) along with five staff members visited the Science Centre .On the second day (04-02-2020) Computer Science and Engineering A and B students (100) along with seven staff members visited the Science Centre. On the third day (05-02-2020) Civil and IT students (85) along with five staff members visited the Science Centre.On the fourthday(06-02-2020)  ECE A, ECE B and EEE students (96) along with six staff members visited the Science Centre.

Objectives of the visit:

      • *To understand the gap between academic course and real world.
      • *To gain useful information related to the practical aspects.
      • *To know the design and concepts of Engineering.
      • *To learn about the principle behind the science.
      • *To understand the different applications of Mathematics.
      • *To explore classroom concepts with real time examples.
      • *To acquaint students with practical knowledge

The Parent Teachers’ Interaction meeting was held on 15/02/2020 at 2.00 p.m. in the Conference Hall. Around hundred parents attended the meeting along with the staff members. The meeting started with the prayer song and the welcome address was given by the Vice Principal Dr.Marsaline Beno. Our college PTA Coordinator Dr.Mary Geisa presented the minutes  the executive committee meetings. The Principal Dr.J.Maheswaran gave the special address related to the various activities of the college which are in progress to attain NBA for CIVIL, CSE IT and autonomous status. He also detailed the academic schedule, Anna University regulations, Internal Exam performances and disciplinary issues among the students.  The Correspondent, Rev.Dr.M.Maria William delivered the presidential address. He explained about the mentality of students and gave tips to parents to take care of their children’s mental and physical health. PTA joint secretary Ms.Nanthini congratulated the HODs and staffmembers for their dedication and support for their wards. PTA president Mr. Charles delivered the responsibilities of the parents. The meeting ended at 4.15p.m. with the vote of thanks by Dr. V.Christus Jeya singh, Dean, Students Affairs.
