Training Programme on

“Government support & Role of Banks in the promotion of Entrepreneurship”

One day training programme conducted along with EDII-TN HUB and ED Cell Department if Information Technology, FXEC on 10th August 2021 at  11:00 am through google meet platform. Around 76 students from SCAD group of institutions and St. Xavier’s Catholic College of Engineering attended the programme. The event started with an addres by Prof. J. JerlinRajan, EDC Coordinator, who extended his warm welcome to the participants and resource person.

Mr. M. Siva Baarathi, Field Coordinator, EDII-TN HUB, Anna University Regional Campus ,Tirunelveli was the resource person he delivered the topic on“Government Support to Entrepreneurs and the Role of Banks in the Promotion of Entrepreneurship”. He explained the various schemes through which the Government of India and the State Government are supporting the entrepreneurs. He highlighted the various schemes like UYEGP, PMEGP and NEEDS and the subsidies available to entrepreneurs. He explained the Mudra Loan Scheme and the procedures to obtain the loan under this scheme. Students interacted freely and collected lot of information from the speaker. The session was highly informative to the participants.

The session was concluded at 12:30 pm by a vote of thanks from Prof. Galesh, Secretery, EDC, SXCCE. He expressed special gratitude to the resource person and his team members for the successful conduct of the programme.

Three Days

Entrepreneurship Awareness Camp

       St. Xavier’s Catholic College of Engineering, Entrepreneurship Development Cell organized a three day Entrepreneurship Awareness Camp from 10th to 12th March 2021. The programme was funded by National Science and Technology Development Board, under DST-NIMAT project of Department of Science and Technology, Government of India supported by Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII). The participants of the camp were second, third and final year students from Engineering and technology background and 120 students participated, presented New Business Ideas in the camp and owned prizes. The programme was conducted in SXCCE premises. The programme included sessions on different aspects of entrepreneurship including a factory visit to a small scale industry. The resource persons included entrepreneurs, intrapreneurs and people from eminent government body like DIC, SIDBI & MSME. The Three day camp concluded with a valedictory session and a humble vote of thanks.

Day 1 – 10th March 2021

Session 1:

The Camp was inaugurated by Mr.A. Nagappa Pillai, Retired Senior Manager, SBI and Rev.Fr. M. Maria William, Correspondent – SXCCE. Objectives of the camp were presented and the speaker emphasized the Importance of Innovation and Entrepreneurship. The speaker provided insights on entrepreneurship, who is an entrepreneur, qualities of entrepreneur, entrepreneurial success. He also spoke about startups with real time examples. He also cited the examples of successful entrepreneurs. Inspiring videos on lead India and innovation elicited students’ response. The session was highly interactive.

 Session 2:

Mr. A. Nagappa Pillai, Retired Senior Manager, SBI and Associate member of Indian Institute of Banking, Mumbai. He spoke on the topic “The Spirit of Entrepreneurship”. He emphasized the importance of entrepreneurial attitude. The students were exposed to points on developing the passion towards entrepreneurship and also gained insights on the skills they need to develop to become effective entrepreneurs.

Session 3:

The third session was on the topic “Emerging startup culture in India & Success stories of Indian Start ups. Mr.I Janakiraman, CEO, Dynamic Dreamers, a software based Startup Concern. He spoke about why the startup is needed at present scenario, trend of startup in India, incubation centers in universities and colleges, role of Government in promoting startups, business accelerators like NASSCOM, technology support and few success stories of startups.

Session 4:

Mr.I Janakiraman, CEO, Dynamic Dreamers, a software based Startup Concern, delivered a session on “Risks and Challenges faced by entrepreneurs.” He explained on the ten different aspects that would be considered as risks and challenges for an entrepreneur. He also elaborated the ways to manage those risks and challenges.

Day 2 – 11th March 2021

Session 1:

Dr. D. Anto Pravin Singh, Head and Assistant Professor, AVCAS, conducted an activity session on Idea Generation and Screening of Ideas. Prior to the activity he provided ways to generate ideas and how to screen the ideas based on viability. A common topic on solving traffic issues was given to student groups and they were asked to generate ideas, evaluate the ideas and shortlist the top three ideas that would solve the problem. Student teams actively participated in the task and came out with their innovative, crazy ideas. Resource person also highlighted the advantages of being an entrepreneur and choosing entrepreneurship as a career path.

Session 2:

A session on “Guidelines for Preparation of business plan and Project report” was delivered by Dr. D. Anto Pravin Singh, Head and Assistant Professor, AVCAS. He elaborated nine important components of a business model starting from value proposition to cost structure. The speaker presented a precise outline on how to prepare a project report.

Session 3:

Dr. S. Siva Kumar Manoharan, Managing Director, Vibrant Business Solutions, Nagercoil, provided valuable insights on Micro, Small and Medium enterprises, different types of funds required to run a company, ways to source funds. He spoke about SIDBI and presented various scheme of SIDBI to support the entrepreneurial ecosystem in India. The Resource person also provided useful links for knowing about startups, registering startup. The session was highly interactive and the speaker clarified various questions on availing funding support.

Session 4:

Mr. Varatha Ganesh, Assistant Engineer, District Industry Centre, Nagercoil, remained present and emphasized on importance of innovation in student life. They also briefed the students about the crucial requirements of a sound business pitch and highlighted current scenario of MSME Development at state and national level with government policies and supports. They also discussed the ways to develop projects and commercialize the same .The students had an interactive and thought provoking session.

Day 3 – 12th March 2021

Factory Visit to Nanjil Integrated Dairy Unit 1:

The Third day of the camp was to visit a factory. The participants were taken to Nanjil Integrated dairy firm, Unit 1, an ISO 9001:2015 & ISO 22000:2005 certified company situated in Mulagumoodu, Kanyakumari District. On arrival we were given a hearty welcome by             Mr. R. Ranjith Singh, Deputy General Manager and were led to the conference room where we had a session on the milk industry – how it operates in the National market. He explained the profile, aims, objectives and the philosophy of operations of Nanjil integrated dairy as well as the detailed the process of procuring and delivering the milk along with the products they offered.

Mr. A. Darwin, Plant Manager, Quality Assurance delivered a talk on Nanjil Dairy network, the production process the organization structure and work culture. He stressed on the importance of the time management & Quality control in Milk Industry and gave the detailed explanation about the marketing strategies, Distribution strategies and the channels used and HR practices followed. Students witnessed the entire production process i.e. clarification, standardization, homogenization, pasteurization through a class as we are not allowed to go in. students were taken into the quality control department where they saw the testing of milk for purity & for quality. The visit to control room was good experience for students they witnessed the efficient distribution of milk to cover 1600 shops across the city.

The visit turned out to be a great learning and enriching experience. Lots of students doubts and misconceptions were cleared after an interesting interactive session with Mr. Justin, Finance Manager who explained the total financial activities of the firm, also highlighted the various tax systems followed in India.

Brain Storming Session:

An internal brainstorming activity session was conducted after returning from the factory. The discussion was about campus startups. Few students who are running their own startups shared their views on how to startup as a student, what are the challenges faced and advantages of starting up early.

Valedictory Session:

The concluding session of the EAC was the valedictory session. Dr. M. Marsaline Beno, Vice Principal gave the valedictory address and the function was presided by Dr. V. Christus Jeya Singh, Dean-Student Affairs and Dr. R. S. Shaji, Dean-Research, SXCCE. The participants and coordinators were awarded with the certificates and the program concluded with feedback and vote of thanks.

Industrial Motivation Campaign

          Two days Motivational program for budding entrepreneurs “Industrial Motivation Campaign” (IMC) was organized by Entrepreneurship development Cell of St. Xavier’s catholic College of Engineering in association with Ministry of Micro Small & Medium Enterprises, MSME Development Institute Government of India Undertaking, Tuticorin branch, at Rock hostel Auditorium from 19th to 20th February 2021. This programme was sponsored by MSME Development Institute Government of India Undertaking, Tuticorin branch,. 92 Students from various colleges were participated in the program.

The program was started on 19th February, 2021 10:30 am with welcome address given by faculty Coordinator Mr. J. Jerlin Rajan, Assistant Professor, Department of Management Studies. Rev. Fr. Dr. M. Maria William, Correspondent  gave the presidential address,  Dr. J. Maheswaran, Principal gave the special address.

On the First day of the programme, Shri. Nagappa Pillai, Retired Manager Loan processing unit, SBI, Nagercoil, Shri. Gobalan, President of MSME Kanyakumari district (KADIMSIA) remained present and handled the entire session for the first day and emphasized on importance of innovation in student life. they also briefed the students about the crucial requirements of a sound business pitch and highlighted current scenario of MSME Development at state and national level with government policy and support.

On the second day of the programme, Mr. Shyam Gobal, Managing Director, Vibrant Business Solutions, Nagercoil. Mr. Varatha Ganesh, Assistant Engineer, District Industry Centre, Nagercoil. Shri. John Bright, Assistant Director, Tamil Nadu Industries & Investment corporations (TIIC) were resource persons and discussed the importance of innovation and entrepreneurship with the students. They also discussed the ways to develop projects and commercialize the same .The students had an interactive and thought provoking session.

The two days Program was concluded with the vote of thanks delivered by Dr. A. Oliver Bright, Professor, Department of Management Studies.

Entrepreneurship Awareness Camp

         Three days Entrepreneurship Awareness Camp (EAC) was organized by Entrepreneurship development Cell of St. Xavier’s catholic College of Engineering at seminar hall from 5th to 7th February 2020. This programme was sponsored by National Science & Technology, Entrepreneurship Development Board, Ministry of Science and Technology. 143 Students from various disciplines were participated in the camp.

The aim of this programme was to help the students to develop entrepreneurial mind set, learn enterprise initiation and development skills. The specific objective of this program were,

  • Recognize the innate entrepreneurial competences within them
  • Recognize and assess opportunities in the environment
  • Understand the role that entrepreneur can play in enhancing their lives and lives of others.

This program was participatory and practical knowledge oriented. Various training sessions like Case-studies, audio visuals, field work, assignment, simulation exercise, group discussion and counseling were conducted during this programme. Dr. Joseph Raj, Retired Professor in Economics, S.T. Hind College ,Nagercoil, and  prof. Arul King, former coordinator of EDC, SXCCE, remained present and handled the entire session for the first day.

The program was started on 5th February, 2020 9:30 am with welcome address given by faculty Coordinator Mr. J. Jerlin Rajan, Assistant Professor, Department of Management Studies. He introduced the office bearers for the academic year 2019-2020. Rev. Fr. Dr. M. Maria William, Corresspondent  gave the presidential address,  Dr. J. Maheswaran, Principal gave the special address and Mr. Asoke ,student secretary of EDC,  Final year Mechanical Engineering deliverd vote of thanks.

On the first day of the programme, following topics were delivered by the experts,

  • Why Entrepreneurship? Entrepreneurship as a career
  • SME Development in India/ Tamil Nadu – present scenario
  • Identification of business opportunities
  • Process of starting SMEs

In these sessions, both experts used several examples to narrate importance of Entrepreneurship and Entrepreneurship as a career option. They have highlighted current scenario of SME Development at state and national level with government policy and support.

On the second day of the programme, Dr. MarsalinBeno, , Dr. LovelinAuguskani,  Mr. Janaki Raman, Mr. Berlin Joshua and Mr. C.T.R. Saravanan were resource persons and following topics were delivered by the experts

  • Business Environment Scanning
  • Financial planning and assistance to establish SSI units
  • Govt policy & Statutory requirements
  • Success stories of an Entrepreneurs

 

In these sessions the experts  depicted the business environments and their climatic conditions, also highlighted the financial institution lending money for start-ups, and portrayed many successful entrepreneurs such as Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple Enterprise, Mark Zukerberg, founder of Face Book, Bill Gates founder of Microsoft etc. highlighted the hardships and failure stories of these entrepreneurs and the unique ways they adopted for success. This talk highly motivated the students to take initiative to become entrepreneurs.

On the last day of the programme, in the morning session expertsMs. Swarna Latha, B.E., MBA., General Manager, District Industry Centre, Nagercoil& Mr. Varatha Ganesan, M.E., Assistant Engineer ( Industries), District Industry Centre, have delivered talk in the following two sessions,

  • Communication in Business
  • Govt subsidies for new start – ups

An industrial visit was organized in the afternoon sessions at Cape Flour Mills (P) Ltd, Chunkankadai, Nagercoil. Three faculty members along with 143 students visited the factory and Mr. Raj Kumar, Production Manager, has guided the team. This visit was planned with the brief exposure to technical part as well as focused task including study of Technical, Financial, Marketing and Commercial requirements in the business – Hand out – Man behind the business.

Some of participating students gave their feedback related to programme which was then followed by certificate distribution to the participants of the programme.

Programme was ended with vote of thanks from Mr. J. JerlinRajan, Faculty Advisor, EDC, SXCCE.

“One Entrepreneur for a Family and One Auditor for a Village”- Entrepreneurship Awareness Programme

EDC Cell organized  one day workshop on Entrepreneurship Awareness Programme on 14-09-2019.The aim of the programme is  to create “One Entrepreneur for a Family and One Auditor for a Village”. More than 2000 Students from various colleges and schools  have participated and the programme was grant success.

The programme was inaugurated by honourable Minister  Thiru. M C Sampath,  Minister for Industrial Department, Govt. of Tamil Nadu, and  felicitated by  hon’ble Thiru. N. Thalavai Sundaram, Tamil Nadu Government special representative in Delhi, and  Thiru. Prashant M. Wadnere, I.A.S., Kanyakumari district collector gave the presidential address, and Rev. Fr. Dr. M. Maria William, Correspondent welcomed the gathering.

Dr. N. Sreenath, IPS, Superintendent of Police, Kanyakumari district, gave inspirational talk on budding entrepreneurs and their ethical responsibilities towards society. He also highlighted the need for accidents free Tamil Nadu.

Thiru. G. Sanmuganathan, Development Commissioner, Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises delivered talk on importance of entrepreneurs. He also trained the students by highlighting the prevailing industrial policies and trade regulations along with the new credit policies for MSME.

Thiru. M. Jeya Ram I.R.S., Assistant Commissioner of Income tax officer Tirunelveli – Nagercoil charge, delivered talk on importance of  economical development through income tax and GST. He also guided students to understand the procedures of Charted Accountant Course (CA).

Tiru. S.A. Asokan, President of Kanyakuamari district, Cooperative Milk, delivered talk on entrepreneur and entrepreneurship also motivated to start start- ups in the local markets.

Thiru. D. John Thangam, President, Rubber Sales Corporation, Kanyakumari district, gave talk on the  potentials of rubber based industries in Kanyakumari district.

Thiru Subaiya, General Manager, Kanyakumari district Cooperative Bank and Thirumathi. I. Roseline Premalatha, head, Veeranarayana silk Cooperation, have delivered talk on the  importance of silk business and highlighted the opportunities in the silk industries.
